View Full Version : Hidden Serial Device in the Device Manager

In both Windows XP Pro without SP 1 built in and in
Windows XP Pro with SP 1 built in, I always have a hidden
device that I have to uninstall from the list of devices
in the Device Manager.
The device is always listed under hidden devices in the
device manager, never under other devices, and always has
a yellow exclamation point over it. Upon searching for
drivers on the hard drive, on the Windows XP Pro CD and
the Windows Update website there is never a driver for
this device.
I uninstall it because it baffles me.
I do not use the Serial Ports on the motherboard (Intel-
D850EMVRL and keep them disabled and I am not sure if
they were enabled if it would matter beause I never use
them anyway and always keep them disabled. Why doesn't
this happen with the on board Audio and Parallel Port
both of which I keep disabled and never use?
It is the most puzzling thing.
Any ideas?

If you have an Intel chipset maybe going to their site and downloading the
latest drivers and installer might help. I had a yellow ! in the system
section when I first installed XP home. Abit recommended:
- latest BIOS download
- Intel chipset download
and it fixed it.

The Intel 850 Chipset has an integrated RNG (random number generator) chip
that assists in generating random numbers to strengthen encryption. This is
probably what you're seeing.
You'll need to install the Intel Security driver that is included with the
chipset driver.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dear Robin:
It is not that, because the BIOS is the most current P24
from Intel dated 4.14.03 and the Chipset Software
Installation Utility is also the most current dated 10
Jan 2003.
Perhaps next week or something they will come out with a
new file that will fix the issue.
Just recently and since I bought by the way, I noticed
that my Intel D850EMVRL motherboard was reporting that I
had 6 PCI slots on the board instead of the actual 5. I
never really noticed it until the lastest BIOS PDF stated
that this BIOS revision was correcting the issue whereby
the BIOS reported 6 PCI slots instead of the actual 5.
Amazing.

That is weird, Lawrence, Intel software on an Intel board. Maybe the post
following mine from Big Daddy... is the clue.
