View Full Version : Can NOT HotSync Palm m500 under Windows XP
Robert W. Bortz
April 16th 03, 06:18 AM
To Palm m500 Owners with Windows XP:
I just upgraded from Windows Me to Windows XP Home and
found that my Palm m500 will no longer HotSync with my
desktop. When I called the Palm support phone number, I
was advised to upgrade both my Palm Desktop and HotSync to
the latest versions (both v 4.1.0). I then downloaded
them from your web site and installed same. After the
upgrades were completed and the computer re-booted; the
problem persisted.
The HotSync Manager was setup for local USB. However,
everytime I attempted to sync the palm (cradle to USB
cable to desktop) I received - repeatedly - the following
error message on my Palm:
The connection between your handheld computer and the
desktop could not be established. Please check your setup
and try again.
I also searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and found
Article #330173, and provided a link to same below.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;330173
I have also cut/pasted the text of the article at the end
of my message, so that you don't have to go to the Web for
same. Please review the article and offer a solution to
my problem. Curious that Microsoft was aware of the
problem (article posted last November); but Palm's Tech
Support had no knowledge of the problem, and directed me
(stock answer) to just upgrading the Desktop and HotSync
software.
As my PDA (Palm m500) is an indispensable part of my daily
business activities, this failure to communicate is
devastating. I post my billable hours with the Datebook
and I have a limited amount of days before I start loosing
records. Last successful HotSync occurred on March 30,
2003 (Windows Me environment).
Please help me resolve this problem, as expeditiously as
possible. I have a lot riding on your collective
expertise. Also, if Palm m500 PDA is/will remain
incompatible with Windows XP, then I would like opinions
on a compatible replacement PDA. Hopefully, Palm can not
afford this "bad press" and is already working on or
solved this problem. If so, I'll be eternally grateful if
anyone can
(1) offer the solution, or
(2) dicuss their failed attempts at a solution.
Thanks in advance for your time and efforts on my and many
other's behalf.
Regards,
Robert W. Bortz

Robert,
I have a Palm M505. I'm wondering if it might be a coincidence that your
hotsync'ing stopped when you installed XP. Palms are notorious for SUDS
(Suddenly USB Doesn't Sync). Palm claims that a redesigned cradle, which
they will ship free of charge to you, will solve the problem and they will
also exchange the non-functional unit.
I've run into this problem twice on my own Palm and there is a fix out there
that involves using a shortcut in notepad to completely drain the battery
and thus release the electrostatic build up (which caused the problem in the
1st place) on the unit's serial bus. This fix isn't supported by Palm but
I've used it successfully myself.

All, I have the same problem, except that I have used my
work PC to sync (serial cradle to NT) for 2 years, and I
never had any problem whatsoever.
Now, I just bought a Sony laptop with XP for home, and,
despite uninstalling and re-instaling everything (Palm
desktop v 4.1.0, hotsync, new USB drivers), no way I can
sync.
It looks like Windows could not recognize that the device
was attached,
so I followed the procedure entitled " What To Do If My
Palm Handheld
Does Not Appear In The Device Manager Of Windows XP" in
the Support
section of the palm website.
I have added the palm handheld in the "Add Hardware
Device Wizard", but
when I try to update the USB driver in Device Manager, I
can only go as
far as step 15, i.e. I try to install the driver from
C:\Palm\USB_driver
(I can not find C:\Program Files\Palm on my laptop), and
then I get a
message that says : "Cannot continue the Hardware Update
Wizard - The
wizard could not find a better match for your hardware
than the software
you currently have installed"
In the meantime, in the Palm Handheld Properties in the
Device Manager,
I still have the message "This device cannot start. (Code
10)"
I asked Palm for support, their reply was :"This error is
caused by windows not recognising the drivers for the
handheld. If you go to the microsoft website you can
check the error. If
you contact your PC manufactuer they may be able to
upgrade the bios to
try and resolve this issue."
Nothing on the Microsoft website... I will try to
contact Sony, but not too hopeful!
Anybody has any idea to get XP to use the correct driver,
I'd love to hear from you!
