I have just built a P4 3.06 ghz system. Initially I did
not have the hyperthreading option enabled in the sys
BIOS. Once I installed XP home I optimsied the BIOS and
enabled the HT, on restarting the system the os found new
hardware msg came up and installed a second P4 chip. now I
have 2 p4 chips on the system but only 1 actully installed
on the mobo. Is this normal???
Also tested cpu in Sysoft SANDRA and non HT scores were
abysmal(about equivelant to a P3 1.6 ghz cpu) With HT they
were what you might expect.?????

Also have been unable to get any stability when testing or
playing games, CPU temp is 35-50, psu is 550 watt, 2 x
512mb of memory tested individually in differing slots, to
no avail. All drivers installed corectly, tested grapics
card by replacing with a known good one. All to no avail
Anyone please HELP if you can?

I think thats what HT is. It tricks the
system into thinking there are 2 CPUS
as you've noticed. NOT 1.

I think HT is good for graphics programs
like Photoshop and most probably CAD
programs..3d etc..

HT systems are highly recommended installed with HT enabled only. Then if
you want to disable you can, and alternate betrween the two, but you have to
at least have it enabled when you initially install to get XP to set itself
up properly. Also make sure you have SP1 installed.
