Are you sure that XP hasn't got any damaged files?...go
to start menu then RUN, type cmd, in the next window type
SFC/SCANNOW to check for damaged files and to see if
everything is ok. I had this problem after i had just got
rid of a virus and worm. Also i couldn't find any of the
certified files available in windows updates and in the
end i had to re-install XP. Are there any programmes or
applications you can't access?
