View Full Version : 2.4 GHz Processor indicates 1.8
Tin Man
December 5th 03, 01:08 AM
I just built a new PC with an Asus M-Board, an Intel P4, 2.4 Ghz processor a
Gig of Ram.
Works fine. Runs fine, relative to my old PC, but when I right click "My
Computer", Properties, it indicates a 2.4 Ghz processor, but at the bottom
of the window is says 1.8 something.
I did a performance test and it indicated a 2.4 Ghz running at 1.8.
What's this all about. My M-Board is supposed to automatically detect the
CPU speed. I couldn't see anywhere to change it.
Did I miss something somewhere or is this just one of those deals like never
having all the HD you pay for?

Update your motherboard's BIOS.

Load the BIOS defaults before doing that. See if it cures it. Then upgrade
the BIOS if it doesn't (or if you want to anyway)

You are confusing the micro processor rating and the oscillator that runs
it. Your mother board must have the proper oscillator and/or tap to run the
processor at the 2.4 speed. Get the specs for your mothe board.

You're probably running a 533MHz (quad-pumped 133MHz) frontside bus
processor at 400MHz FSB. The multiplier is locked to x18 (133 x 18 = 2.4) on
this processor, so it's now running at 100x18 = 1.8. Check your motherboard
manual to figure out how to set it to 133/533MHz FSB.
Hope this helps.

If you'll post the model of your ASUS board, somebody can take a look at the
manual to check for BIOS settings. My mobo is MSI, not ASUS, but there is a
section of my BIOS called Frequency/Voltage Control. There is a setting in that
area for CPU FSB Clock. If there's anything like that in your BIOS, my bet is
that it's set to 100. It should be set to 133. 1.8 + 33% = 2.394. The
"something" after 1.8 you mentioned should take the result up to 2.4!

1.8X1.33=2.4. Does that give you a clue? Is your FSB set to 100 when it
should be 133?

Agree, but that cannot be changed in Bios, and is changed via the BSEL
jumper settings,
BSEL0 & BSEL1 should both be jumpered on 3 (which is the ex-factory default
setting!)

Thank you all. I didn't mean to stir up an argument.
I have an Asus P4B533s.
I went to the bios and made a change. I think they had it labeled External
frequency or something like that. Anyway, I changed the CPU settings
manually to 2.4 and then this external frequency to 133 and it now shows
2.43 Ghz. It seems to be a little faster, but that could be in my
perception.
Thanks all for your help.

You have it right now, that's all that counts. Don't worry about an
argument - its just different opinions, all trying to help.
