I can't get it to work. Compaq refuses to send me
anything to fix my Presario 5000 unless I pay $60 for a
warranty, when they have sent me a disk in the past for
free. I just need it replaced. How do I go about fixing
this without paying the $60 for a warranty I don't need?

Elizabeth;
Power off, open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
If that fails:

I get the same problem as elizabeth. Occasionally, durng
startup, i get this screen stating "unmountable boot
volume". I had to restart the PC a couple of times to
solve the problem. What seems to be the problem ?? How
can i solve it ??? Many tks !!!!

Brandon;
Reseating the IDE cable often fixes it.
See the links in my other post if issue remains.

I would think some impending failure in the hard drive
causing tolerance of the reading of the data tracks. Run
some diagnostics such as SMART.
