i was wondering what might be the reasons that the dvd
drive and the cd-rw drive will dissappear sometimes.
i was wondering if its a short or a conflict or another
reason?

running windows xp, pentium 4 2.4

Update the BIOS (or make sure that it is current) and then check cabling and
master/slave configurations.

I've just experienced a similar problem. One way to apparently resolve
it is to remove items "UpperFilter" and "LowerFilter" from the class
entry in the registry (search in this group for the two words and
you'll find more details)

In my case however, I found that the atapi.sys driver in XP doesn't
seem to like marginal cabling and I succeeded by replacing the old
cable connecting my DVD drive to the motherboard with a UDMA-100 rated
cable. Don't know whether my old cable had broken somewhere or whether
the cable rating is important.
