I have three IDE devices connected to my motherboard. My
motherboard is running the VIA 82C596B chipset and
supports up to UDMA 66. I am using 80 conductor, 40 pin
ATA-100 compliant cables.
My hard disk is being recognized by the BIOS as UDMA66.
My DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives are being recognized by the
BIOS as UDMA33.
The problem is I don't think Windows XP Pro is
recognizing these drives' UDMA modes correctly. XP is
showing my HDD as Ultra DMA mode 3 and both CD-drives as
Ultra DMA mode 1. From what I understan, UDMA mode 3 is
33mb/s and UDMA mode 1 is even less. Am I correct in
this? If so, I have tried numerous things in windows as
well as downloading the latest drivers and BIOS updates;
none which have had any effect. Any help??? Please???

I checked the MS Knowledge Base and found this:
http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?Catalog=LCID%3D1033%26CDID%
3DEN-US-KB%26PRODLISTSRC%3DON&withinResults=&QuerySource=gASr_Query&Product=
winxp&Queryc=Ultra+DMA+mode&Query=Ultra+DMA+mode&KeywordType=PHRASE&maxResul
ts=25&Titles=false&numDays=
(You may have to copy and paste the URL).
The fix is actually pretty simple. Hope this helps......

To allow the higher UDMA speeds, you would need to install the chipset
drivers. Since you have a VIA chipset, you may need to download the latest
VIA 4 in 1 Hyperion drivers.
