View Full Version : XP Won't Retain Folder Settings

The main problem I have that I can say with some certainty I an XP
problem is the folder settings.
I used the traditional Windows appearance. I set ALL folders to the
"Details" file arrangement/view sorted by Filename. Then I set
selected folders custom arrangements such as large icons or sorted by
date, etc. XP seems to be unable to consistently keep these settings.
I often forgets the custom settings and falls back to the Details
arrangement. This doen's happen to all custom folders at the same
time. It will revert some folders sometimes and other at other times.
Some folders seem to be more susceptible than others to losing their
custom setting. I haven't figured out the pattern.
On occasion I lose the basic, ALL folders, setting but this happens
much less frequently.
This didn't happen in W98. It remembered the custom settings until
come major event caused all settings including the basic to be lost.
Anybody else having this problem? Is there a fix.

Open Windows Explorer. Select menu Tools | Folder Options. On the resulting
window, select View tab; Under Advanced Settings select 'Remember each
folder's view settings' option and click OK.
Hope this solves your problem.

Thanks. 'Remember each folder's view settings' was checked. It's
something else.

Windows cannot retain more than 400 folder settings, but this can be tweaked
to increase to 8000. May I direct you to MVP Kellys Theriot's response on
23rd Apr to Christ's query which was precisely the same question. The link
(printed here) in the reply will take you to her excellent website. Perhaps
you may like to read her reply also, using Find on the Toolbar; the subject
was "Re: folder views".

It is the 2nd item on the left pane.

I have found my Shangri-La, at the moment, in ntlworld.

Thanks. I'll try this. I wouldn't think I have more than 400 custom
folders but because the number grows over time I suppose it could have
reached that number. But, if resetting the default (general) setting
clears all these (sets the number to 0), I'm forced to do that too
often to reach 400 custom folder settings.

Thanks again for the suggestion, but apparently that wasn't causing my
problem -- it's still happening since installing the registry patch.
