View Full Version : Can I delete fonts????
Pat
March 26th 04, 02:43 PM
Have many fonts in the Windows>Fonts folder and would
like to "clean" up my system. I understand there are
certain fonts not to take out of that folder - anyone
have a list? I think I can move whatever I don't want in
there to another folder and keep them there until I want
to use one and then move it back into the Windows>Fonts
folder. Am I understanding the procedure correctly????
Don't want to move anything that may cause problems with
other programs running. Any help would be appreciated.

I believe any font listed as True Type (icon with one T on top of another)
os safe to remove. Others are called System Fonts which the computer uses;
not a good idea to remove (: I did this with a bunch of Word Perfect fonts
xp saw fit to have; I don't HAVE Word Perfect so I removed them over a year
ago. Others may disagree, justifiably, so wait for other responses before
doing any removals.

System Fonts are part of the System File Checker protected
files. If you remove any fonts necessary for system operation,
XP will immediately re-install them from the DllCache folder
or prompt for you to insert your XP CD-ROM.
However you should know that unlike 9x/ME O/S's having
a large number of fonts does not affect system performance.

Additionally, there are some fonts that various programs DO need. As
some wild examples, Lotus loads some fonts that the apps need to
display stuff correctly. UPS shipping and FedEx software also installs
some unique stuff it really does need. And though I've not had a
recent version, I know that MS Bookshelf also installs fonts that only
that application uses (and needs).
If fonts are your thing and you find yourself adding and removing them
on a fairly constant basis, you might want to look into a font
management program like Adobe's Type Manager Deluxe (ATM). It has
several great features:
1. you can inactivate fonts that you have installed without actually
uninstalling them.
2. You can arrange the font listing into groups (groups appear just as
folders). So for example, after ATM is installed and your fonts are
placed in a group, then the next program you install will cause the
fonts specific to it to appear outside of the group. Then you make a
new group and place those fonts into it so that you know where they
came from.
3. It can handle all sorts of font formats, TrueType, PostScript,
OpenType...
Its pretty handy.

Not true. XP mostly uses TrueType fonts; and it is especially important
to retain Marlett.ttf which is used for things like the 'maximise;
close minimise buttons' on Windows. See my post Ramesh referred to for
the best advice I could give (thanks Ramesh)

Alex,
I stand corrected. My old 9x days nailed me on this one. So how does one
now know what IS safe to delete ? I have a list of fonts that a
pre-installed WordPerfect trial program put on my computer; It expired but I
have all of these fonts starting with "WP".

The URL in Ramesh's message cannot be found by Google. Would you mind
reposting your remarks about the fonts issue, Alex?

The only real answer is 'ones that the system or installed programs
expect to have available'. So if you have changed the font used for
Icons (say) to a weird script font, you need that one around. So check
in Display - Appearance, Advanced for the one in use for each Item
Leaving that point, the ones you should certainly keep are:
Arial
Courier and Courier New
Marlett (that is used for various symbols, like the X close box on
windows - and BTW to Malvern, that was true in Windows 95 too)
Lucida Sans and Lucida Console
MS Serif, MS Sans Serif and Microsoft Sans Serif
Script
Tahoma
Times
Verdana
Webdings
WingDings
things though like MS Reference will have been put there by (in that
case) Encarta.
One thing you can do is look at the Fonts folder in Details view, with
the Modification Date column available (check it in View - Choose
details if necessary). Then click in that column's header to sort, and
look at Modification date. Ones with 23 August 2001 will be ones that
came with the system, but by no means all of those are essential. OTOH
other ones now may be
Always operate by copying away any you think you do not need, before
deleting them. Then if a program gives trouble (usually by things
appearing in a weird font) you can try to identify which is missing and
reinstall it.

PS - I seem to have forgotten Trebuchet, which is one likely to be used
for desktop icons
