Yesterday my notebook bogged down, Windows explorer would print one line
at a time to screen, taking a minute to fully show the files in a
directory. Task Manager showed Notify.exe was using 92% on the cpu
column. I ended Notify.exe and everything was back to normal. What was
it trying to do?

Could be a virus. Check the machine.

I had an issue with that once, and if has something to do with the
notification area -- that little taskbar area near the clock. maybe that
will give a clue. Of course, a virus could have taken over that process, or
be using that name.
