View Full Version : XP Setup was unable to copy file wave*.* error on install

Hello all,
This problem is driving me mad. I have just bought a new
PC - AMD XP 2.2 1800MHz processor, 512MB DDR, 80GB WD HD,
onboard sound, onboard modem, plus a GeForce 4 440MX with
128MB memory.
I am trying to install XP Pro. The error appears after the
setup restarts in that horrible blue screen style and
begins copying files. By the time it reaches the "w"
files, such as wave, I get a message saying that setup was
unable to copy the files.
If I do skip, I eventually end up with a IRQ_LESS_EQUAL
error message. If I retry, I just end up in a loop.
I first thought it was the disc, so I replaced it with
another version (2002) of XP. This disc does the same
thing. I replaced the CD-ROM. I removed all extra cards
until the only thing left was the graphics card.
No joy.
Please - does anyone know anything about this? I ask after
having held for 40 minutes for MS assistance - before
being cut off...
Thanks!
Brad.

Have you tried to copy the entire CD to the hard drive and then
installing from there? I had a similar problem with my Samsung
CD-RW/DVD drive. Microsoft told me to copy the CD to the hard drive and
install from there. It worked fine and I have had no problems with my
CD drive so I don't know why it wouldn't install from it.

I had a very similar problem with a motherboard whose memory
controller was dying (it subsequently "died hard"). In my case, the
only cure was a new MB.
