Running in XP, my computer shuts down without warning. I can immediately restart it and it works correctly. I have checked the power supply, got a new motherboard, checked the fan, scanned for viruses and had CompUSA check it. They had it for days but coul
d not find the cause and said it did not shut down while they had it. It will work fine for days and then just shut down. Another day it shuts down several times. I can have just one program open or be on the internet and doing several tasks. There seems
to be no rhyme or reason. Any suggestions?

You might want to check your Application Error Log and see if there are any
errors that coincide with the shutdown times. Also, there is an option that
set whether or not the computer restarts when a critical error is received;
I can't quite remember how to get there (not on xp currently), but I think
it's right-click my computer, click the Advanced tab, click Startup and
Recovery, and there should be like a "System Failure" section or something
that's very similar. There should be a couple checkboxes, one of which
being Automatically reboot. If this is checked, uncheck it. You will still
be forced to reboot when an error is received, but the computer will not
automatically do it, and thus you will be able to see a blue screen before
reboot.

Thanks, Tony. I checked the error reporting and the only reference for the latest shut down was W32TIME which I think is the time check program. I use a phone line for the internet so it could have tried to access the time check and been offline. I will k
eep a good record for the future.
When it shuts down, the computer doesn't reboot. It almost seems to be hibernating, you can hear the motor still running but the computer is shut down. I have to turn off the power socket and turn the computer back on. I have done as you suggested and unch
ecked the reboot option.
