View Full Version : Logitech Scanner-parallel to USB adapter
None Required

I have a Logitech PageScan Color. The last drivers were for Win95/98. No
drivers for Win2K/XP. Emulation does NOT work. I've done a Win98>XP upgrade
and scanner functionality disappeared. I've done a clean XP install and the
drivers will not load (get error message).
There IS an XP driver for a USB version of the same scanner that seems to
work. I (like dozens of others) am wondering if it is feasible to get a
Parallel to USB adapter and load the USB based drivers. Anyone have
experience with this conversion or anything like it?

I have had, for years, a Belkin USB to parallel adapter. Surely this is
what you want. As I understand your post, you have a parallel scanner that
you want to run using USB. I have a parallel printer running under USB1. XP
has all of the necessary drivers. Wait a minute while I check Belkin's
site...
.... Well, I can't see it on their technical support site, (for it is a
product at least 4 years old)
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatSectionView.process?Section_Id=2
but they have a 'contact us' link, so I suggest you e-mail them.

It's a 2 part question really. I think the parallel>USB part may work by
itself. Then will a scanner driver written specifically for USB be able to
be able to load and "see" the scanner that is basically parallel? I beleive
the issue is the XP base OS doen't want DOS type control of hardware.
I am hoping someone had the gumption to try this particular experiment. I
know some printers have drives so they'll work both with a parallel and USB
connection.

As I said, XP installed my 1993 IBM 4029/010 Laser printer, originally
running under Windows 3.0, now on a USB to parallel cable, without any
problem. Its port is 'USB... Virtual printer port' and XP thinks it is a
USB1 device and uses a USB driver. My printer has *ONLY* a parallel port
connection. USB was not invented when I bought it.

Unless they've changed them, those usb-parallel converters are meant for
printers only. Check the packaging carefully, you might find the small print
that says for printers only. not for zip drives, etc.
And if there are no drivers for it, plugging it into another port isn't
going to change anything.

I don't throw anything away. My packaging says merely 'USB to parallel
adapter', but it might be that parallel scanners and other devices were not
yet invented in 1998!

What brand is it? If it does work with other devices, that would be good to
know.

It's a Belkin, but I have already looked at their main site and I can't
find it. Maybe they don't make it any more. However, they have a 'contact
us' address on their site and I found them very helpful.

Those are the ones I used to sell; it seems the earlier packaging just said
parallel to USB, but later packaging was a bit more explicit. I haven't
carried them recently, though, which is why I wondered if they'd changed
them to work with anything except printers.
It's like the parallel printer switches; some of them are very explicit
about stating which printers they will or won't work with, others are less
informative.

You are right. I bought one as soon as they became available, and the
package just states 'USB to parallel'. It is working perfectly on this XP
Pro system right now, and drives my main laser printer, which prints
everything except my letters.
