I also have this problem with updates:

Q817287: Critical Update (Catalog Database Corruption in
Microsoft Windows)

and

331953: Security Update (Windows XP)

and

811493: Security Update (Windows XP)

I have tried stopping and restarting etc. the crypto
thingy in your instructions and have had the same problem
with doing i got to thet 'ren %systemroot%\system32
\catroot2 oldcatroot2'. It said 'access is denied'. I
also tried to manually rename the folder and it wouldnt
let me change it. If anyone has any information regarding
this i'd be extremely gratefu;l for any assistance

Thanks again

Andy
