Recently, after my computer has been working relatively
well, I started getting this error message saying "The
device driver for 'Communications Port(COM1)' device is
preventing the machine from entering hibernation. Please
close all applications and try again. If the problem
persists, you may need to update this driver." I haven't
changed anything lately so why is this happening? I tried
uninstalling the drivers and rebooting and when I tried
to hibernate again, I got the same message only the
device was the modem. Any help would be appreciated!

I got a similar message citing the print spooler. I had to go to services,
close the spooler, and then it was OK. It only happened the once, and my
spooler is set to automatic again, permanently, with no problems.
I'd hazard a guess that XP thinks something is running when it isn't,
unlikely as it sounds. If you are able to hibernate successfully after
getting back to the plain desktop, I'd put it down to one of the mysteries
of the universe and hope that it doesn't happen too often. The experts on
XP's internals may have a better solution!

Do you have Quicken installed? If so, it is causing the error.
