The processor on my old XP based PC died, so I bought a
new system, also xp based, and installed the old HDD on
the new system, hoping to use the programs, especially
Office 97. The old drive, now the E, shows everything
where it should be, but when I click on the Outlook icon,
it can't find the application. How can I recover this,
and other programs, without a CD?

You have to install Office 97 again. Outlook needs lots of files and
registry entries to successfully load and open up. These things will not be
in place unless you actually install Office 97.

Hi Mark,

The programs need to be installed under the new system using the =
original installation media. You can't simply run them from the old hard =
drive, as they rely on files and registry entries that are only present =
in the old installation. These will be missing in the new system until =
the programs are actually installed (and no, you can't simply copy them =
from the vestiges of the old system).

You'll find that Outlook is not the only program that won't work.
Almost no program will work after you do this. That's because an
installed program has many references to its location, in the
registry and elsewhere, that don't exist in your new
installation.

You can use your data on the E: drive, but you'll have to
reinstall all your programs.
