I'm not sure if this is the place for this question, but
my wife and I have a high-speed internet cable
connection, shared on a router. She uses a 5-year-old
computer with Windows 98 SE. I have a Dell Inspiron 8100
notebook with Windows XP. She has no trouble with her
connection to the internet, but I have to reboot every
two hours or so because I get a mesage indicating the
computer is unable to connect to the server. Both
Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are affected. If
one doesn't work, neither does the other.
Thanks for any help.

If you are running XP Pro, a user time limit may have been
set. Presume you are the administrator so you can look in
the help files and find out how to change it.

Thanks for the try, but I have Windows XP Home Edition.
Stil, I'll go looking and see whether I can find
something similar. If not, I'll be back.

Nope. Couldn't find anything in XP Home Edtiion that
looks like it sets a time limit on an internet
connection. Any other ideas?
Thanks.

Do you have a firewall on XP that may be blocking lease renewals? My cable
modem ISP here has a 4-hour lease that checks halfway through in some way,
and if it cannot renew the lease because its DHCP packet is bounced, it
terminates the lease after another 2 hours. When everything is working,
this is transparent to the user.

Nope. Once in a while I leave the machine on overnight
(though it goes to "sleep"), and in the morning it works
well . . . for a little while. It's not precisely two
hours (or four).
Thanks all the same.

You're welcome. That was my best guess at 00.38 am!
