I've installed (new install), one 80 Gig HD (new install)
on xp-pro, no problems, when I attemp to add, install an
identical HD, windows doesn't recognize it, althought it
is read by the bio's on start up. I was told that putting
in an identcal drive confuses windows. I'm at a loss here,
will reinstalling windows with both drives hooked up solve
my problem? Or do I need to reformat the original disk and
start over. Lastly, windows will not allow me to reformat
the first disk. Any help greatly appreciated.

Has the drive been partitioned and formatted? You can do this from
within XP using its disk manager, but you won't otherwise be able to
see or access the drive from XP until this has been done. Assuming
that the drive has been set up with a partition structure and format
that is compatible with XP, it should be recognised at bootup.
Reinstalling XP should _not_ be necessary.
Also recheck the jumper settings of the two drives. I have
occasionally seen strange behaviour when the IDE Master in a 2-drive
setup has been jumpered as a "Single Drive" - this is a different
setting to "Master" on some drives.

The first time I added a new 60 gig hard drive to Win XP Pro, the os
recognized it, but I couldn't use it until I told XP what letter to assign
to the new drive.

Then, how do you assign a letter to the new hard drive?

Administrative Tools | Computer Management | Disk Management. That's
where you "FDISK" and Format HDs under XP, too.
