What part of the computer limits the amount of memory I can add? Right now I have a laptop with two 256MB memory chips. Could I, for example, put a 512MB chip in one of those? At what point does increasing memory fail to translate into increased speed?

The maximum amount of memory depends on a few factors. One is the chipset.
Armed with your model name and number go to crucial.com and take a look at
their memory selector. It will give you the type, speed, and quantity of
memory supported. Another is physical size and type of the module in
question. Depending on the operating system and application software you may
need as little as 128MB or as much as 512MB given the "typical" user and
apps.
