Does anyone know what is causing this problem with the sound on my PC?
The sound is completely distorted. It makes a metallic screechy sound and
is virtually unrecognisable. This is a problem that occurs whatever the
sound is and what ever the PC is doing. For instance the few bars of music
as you log in just come out as a screech. The problem occurs even when I am
playing a music CD or a DVD.
These are some of the things I've tried:-
(1) The problem first occurred when I upgraded to Windows XP Professional.
The sound was fine before that on Windows 98, so I bought a new sound card
(Sound Blaster 4.1 Digital) as it stated on the box that it was Windows XP
compatible. The problem persisted with this new card.
(2) I tried reverting back to Windows 98, but the problem continued!!!!
I've now reloaded Windows XP again.
(3) I've checked the sound card drivers. They are digitally signed and
definitely the right ones.
(4) I've checked the volume is set correctly.
(5) I've tried changing the hardware acceleration.
(6) I've tried checking that the sound card is correctly seated.
I'm pretty sure now that the problem is not the soundcard, but some other
hardware or software error or setting. One thing I've noticed is that the
problem seems to be related to processor or graphics card activity. For
instance if I play a music CD on Windows Media Player with one of the
background moving ambience screens showing the music plays without too much
distortion. If I change to a more simple ambience (such as the bars or
waves), the sound gets worse. If I minimise the player so that there are no
moving graphics on my screen, then it really distorts. Even moving the
mouse around the screen reduces the distortion, providing you keep the mouse
moving quickly.
I'm confused as to why the problem has continued even though I changed
soundcards and even tried reverting back to Windows 98. I think when I
first loaded Windows XP it must have changed some setting somewhere, but I'm
at a complete loss as to what is causing it.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Tina
