printer problems deleteing

Sometimes, when I want to cancel a print job. The printer seems to go out of
control. It will print out one line of junk or some symbol on one page and
continue printing one page at a time. I can turn the printer off, pull the
cable from the computer and it still runs out of control. It finally stops
but I don't understand why. I am running Xp and Hp 842C. I hit cancel but it
will keep printing. Just looking for some thoughts.
