The XP version installed on my laptop has the curser automatically selecting
if left on a button. How can I disable this function? If you leave the
curser in the wrong place XP selects things you do not want selected. You
have to remember to park the curser.

Open My Computer > Tools menu > Folder Options
on the general tab (near bottom) choose Double-click to
open an item (single-click to select)

In addition to changing from single click to double click -- look in
Control Panel> Mouse for a "snap to" or similar option. The description of
the item will read similar to "automatically move pointer to the default
button in a dialog box."
