for some hardware im trying to download(directx as an
example) requires windows 98 or higher, but seems not to
recognize that my windows is windows XP. it says that it
is not compatible. It sees my windows as an unkown OS.
How can i fix this?

Make sure you download the correct drivers and DirectX, marked for Windows
XP. It is sounding like you are downloading the wrong ones.

Make sure that you download software that is WinXP-compatible.
