cd/dvd and cdr dont work in xp pro

recently installed xp only to find my cd/dvd drive and my
cdr drive wont work.in device manager it shows yellow
errors but no drives shown in under 'my computer'
the cd/dvd is a compaq 116 drive and the cdr is a
phillips 4801.The system is compaq pressieo 5113uk amd900.
is there a patch somewhere to fix this..

This cold be caused by some references to drivers being left behind in the
registry after uninstalling an application.

or the 'Restore Missing CD Drive' registry patch here:

What is does is remove lowerfilters and upperfilters from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11C
E-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Note that the registry patch isn't officially supported, and you should take
proper precautions to back up your registry before doing so. After
uninstalling the patch if you find some programs like CD Recording or DVD
Decoding applications fail to work, reinstall them.
