When files are opened, closed, programs installed and
deleted, temp files are created and purged, the location of
files on the hard drive (floppies too) gets scrambled.
These fragmented files must be found before the programs can
open and that takes time.
Defragging puts the scrambled files back in the optimum
order.
XP and all Windows ship with a defrag utility and it should
be used on a regular schedule if you best performance.
To learn more, do a Google search for "disk operation" then
"disk fragmentation" then "defrag" and you'll find lots of
articles on the subject.
Look up the MSKB www.support.microsoft.com and look at
www.diskkeeper.com

Actually, it's www.diskeeper.com (one "k"). ;-)
Browse around the site to find the book titled "Fragmentation - The
Condition, The Cause, The Cure". (OK, I'll do the browsing for you --
it's at http://www.execsoft.com/fragbook/fragbook.htm) As the title
suggests, it covers the subject pretty thoroughly. Keep in mind this
book was originally written in regards to the VMS operating system,
but it's still applicable to the Windows NT/2000/XP realm, too.
I hope this helps -
