I recently purchased a new Dell machine with XP
professional. I hooked up my old IDE harddrive with 98 on
it to recover some files from it (THE DISK WAS BROKEN). I
was able to connect the old drive, recover the files, and
disconnect it no problem. Now whenever I boot up my
machine, AND ONLY WHEN I LOG INTO MY USER ACCOUNT, the
windows/system32 folder automatically opens. How can I
prevent this from happening?

See "System32 Folder Opens When Logging on to Windows XP, Windows
2000, or Windows NT 4.0" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=170086).

Hi MK,

You can d/load and run the fix that is available here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Scroll down to line #260, right-hand column -> System32 Folder Opens Upon
Boot

Also, have a look at this MSKB article regarding that issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=170086
