Hello. A while back I put Windows 98 onto my 100GB hard
drive then decided to re-install Windows XP Pro. When it
asked me what hard drive to install it to, I forgot to
put it over the 100GB with Win 98, so it install over my
other h/d, a 40GB. Now whenever I start my computer, I
have to choose Windows XP or Windows 98 in the DOS
enviroment. I take out the Win 98 h/d and it gives me the
error "F1 = ?? F2 = Default" then it says "NTLDR not
found press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". I also tried
formatting the master boot record by using the FORMAT
syntax "format /mbr" it gave me some error message
like, "Invalid switch" (I think). What do I have to do
without re-install Windows XP?
Thanks in advance, Fraser
Change your C:\boot.ini file to look like this...
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
This is the default...the way MS writes it...

Ok i will try that, i forgot to mention that my windows
98 hard drive is C:\ and the Windows XP is D:\. whenever
i take the win 98 drive out it gives me the error message
which i stated in my first post. i want to have only the
xp hard drive (d:) in the computer, but do i have to do
something with driver letters or the master boot record?

>i had got the same message. i also have 2 harddrives one
with windows 98 and the other xp. when i took the 98 drive
and then tried boot i got same error message as yours. i
do believe if yours is set up the way mine is. your 98
drive is set as primary master?? and xp primary slave?? if
it is when you take out 987 drive also take out xp drive
and change jumpers to make it your primary. then put back
in and boot up normaly. i think this should work.

No, it wont because the boot entries for XP on D are in the Master Boot =
