Situation NetMeeting-Messenger-Windows XP-Windows 98SE

OK, here's the scenario. I have an XP computer and a 98SE computer sharing
a connection to the Internet via a router. I'm trying to set up a
NetMeeting session with my daughter who is on a Windows 98 computer.

When I contact her with the XP computer, we can type to each other on
Messenger. When I called her using her IP on NetMeeting, NetMeeting showed
the connection as being made, but no sound or video went through. We could
not set up audio in Messenger, either. HOWEVER, I moved over to the Windows
98SE computer and was able to make both Messenger and NetMeeting
connections. Both video and audio worked correctly, even though I was
behind the router.

We are both using Messenger 6.1. On the 98 computers, NetMeeting is version
3.02. On XP, the version that came with XP is version 3.01.

Anyone know why the old computers can "talk" to each other, but the XP
computer cannot talk to her computer?

What manufacturer/model router (I presume with the latest firmware?)?

Generally if you are behind a router you will not be able to receive
incoming NetMeeting calls and outgoing calls will have no incoming
audio/video. Use of the dmz feature of the router will generally allow you
to have incoming audio/video on outgoing calls and incoming call handling
( for calls place to the wan IP of the router).

Messenger audio/video requires UPnP support in the router.

Assuming nothing changed at the other end I can't think of any explanation
for your results (a dmz setup in one computer and not the other would
explain the NetMeeting result but not the Messenger one).

Nothing in XP itself should make it any different than 98 ( unless there is
a software firewall running on XP causing a problem).

Router is a new Linksys BEFSR41. Neither computer is DMZ'd. Both computers
have Zonealarm installed and running. I cannot think of any reason why the
98SE would work flawlessly and the XP won't let audio or video through. Is
the NetMeeting bundled with XP a special blend? Does it use a different
server? I wonder what would happen if I installed NetMeeting 3.02 on it?
I'm a bit afraid to try it as I am a newbie to XP. I'm not sure it would
help, however.

I haven't use the befsr41 for a while thought so I am not sure of its
current state.

Both the 98 and XP at your end you mean ? I would uninstall ZA ( at least to
test ) to so if it is the cause of your problem,

Nor can I unless it is a ZA issue? Is the XP firewall disabled?

No.

No -- the use of an ILS server doesn't come into play here anyway as the
calls are using the IP calling method.

There is no NetMeeting 3.02 and no downloadable NetMeeting will install and
run on XP.
