View Full Version : BAFFLED! - usb 2 at usb 1.1 speeds

Okay, I've been fighting this for several days, so I thought I'd
ask...
I recently installed an IOGEAR USB 2.0 PCI card (gic22ou-b) and have
been fighting XP ever since... I've disabled my system board's USB
1.1 ports in the BIOS to simplify the process, and they no longer show
up in the device manager. I have a single USB 2 device (a SanDisk
ImageMate USB 2 compactFlash reader) plugged in.
FIRST I got errors during driver installation, and had to go into
regedit (HKLM/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Enum/USB) and fix the permissions
to get past that.
NEXT I kept getting "hi-speed device plugged into low-speed port"
messages, and went through the XP-sp1 install to get the new Microsoft
"enhanced" drivers. I dutifully deleted all USB stuff and rebooted,
but it still insisted on installing the same "USB Root Hub". NOW,
however, the "hi-speed device" error message went away. But the
reader is still running at low speed in my file transfer tests. It,
and the memory card in it (A Viking 512Mb compactflash) are capable of
far more!
NEXT I explicitly downloaded the drivers from windowsupdate's catalog,
and pointed to the unpacked CAB explicitly with the advanced
"reinstall drivers" option. I got ONE of the two USB Root Hubs to
become a "USB 2.0 Root Hub". The other won't budge.
Even though the reader shows up in the device manager has connected to
the 2.0 hub, it transfers at 1.1 speeds.
*What* am I missing? What else can I try? Here's my current Device
Manager USB section:
Universal Serial Bus Controllers
ALi PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
ALi PCI to USB Open Host Controller
USB 2.0 Root Hub
USB Mass Storage Device
USB Root Hub
The "USB 2.0 Root Hub" shows only the "usbhub.sys" driver
(5.1.2600.1106 xpsp1.020828-1920). The "USB Root Hub" shows that
driver second, behind usbd.sys (5.1.2600.0 XPClient.010817-1148).
Many Thanks!

Remove all USB port drivers (USB 2 and USB 1.1). Reboot and install the
IOGear USB 2.0 drivers. Then, this should be corrected.

When you say to remove all drivers, do you mean to physically delete
the .dll files, or just to choose "uninstall" for them in the device
menu? When I do the latter, I get a message from the IOGEAR setup
program saying "WinXP SP1 has default driver so do not need to install
ALi EHCI Driver". Which .dll's need to be deleted, if that is the
route?
It seems that IOGEAR is assuming Microsoft's drivers are better!
What do you think?
