Hi,
I'd greatly appreciate some help. This has been going on
for about a day and has already driven my friends and I
nuts... Sorry it is a bit long-wounded...
I'm on XP Professional and using Windows Messenger
4.7.2009. Yesterday morning when I logged on, WM asked
me to add one of my existing contacts (i.e., one that is
already in my list of contacts) again, I agreed. We'll
call this contact Contact A. The strange thing was the
name/alias of this contact appeared to be the same as
another of my existing contacts (Contact B). I thought
this was just a co-incidence when I agreed to add this
contact.
Under normal circumstances, Contact A belongs to Group X
and Contact B belongs to Group Y.
Now, every time I log on, Contact A asks to be added even
though it already exists. Regardless of what I say,
it'll add itself into both Group X and Y. When Contact A
logs on, only one of the entries will show its correct
status.
Contact B has disappeared, presumably taken over by
Contact A because the alias was the same. Now, Contact A
doesn't know Contact B, and Contact A said he's done
nothing to Messenger.
A similar problem has taken place with Contact C, it
keeps asking to be added, although it's already been on
my list for months. Contact C seems to be OK at the
moment, but we'll see.
Another thing is, Messenger has created a group
called 'Individuals', which I can't remove. I thought it
normally put 'ungrouped' people into 'Other People'.
Messenger will also log me on and off every 5 minutes,
which drives everyone nuts, even though WM says I'm
online all the time.
I've tried these but all to no avail.
- Removed Group X and put Group X's members into Group
Y. (When Contact A asks to be added, it'll recreate
Group X!)
- Removed all entries of Contact A, B and C and added
them back individually.
- I've checked my Allowed List, and found one
unrecognised address. I've since banned this address.
- Searched for a solution online but couldn't find
anything.
- I've made sure my Antivirus and Firewall have the
latest definitions. There's been no record of strange
activities.
- Event Viewer also didn't record any strange activities.
Thanks!
