When I put my hard drive on Ultra DMA mode 5 and start XP
it goes to the windows screen with the blue bars that
move and then it flashes a blue screen for half a second
and then restarts. But when it restarts it uses Ultra
DMA mode 2. Has anyone else experienced this or knows
what may cause this? Any help appreciated.

Thanks

There are a number of different things that could cause this.....

See:

They range from bad motherboard drivers, to upgrading problems, to BIOS/CMOS
configurations being incorrect.

Also ensure your 80-ribbon cable is not damaged or badly twisted.
