View Full Version : CD drive crashing my system

I put together my first system from scratch recently.
Everything went well for the first week or two... now
I've run into a severe problem. I installed two CD drives-
-the slave is a read-only and the primary is a
rewritable. I think I first noticed the problem after I
updated the drivers for the primary... when I start the
computer or when I try to use the primary CD drive, my
system crashes... BAAAAD. I mean, we're talkin complete
freeze up, here. Not even the blue screen of death, just
a total shut down, power off, nada/zip/zilch. Device
manager tells me it's working properly, there are four
drivers listed (cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys, and
storprop.dll are the four drivers device manager lists
attached to that drive). I tried updating the drivers
through device manager's convenient wizard, but received
the message that current drivers are the best... I can't
record cd's, can't even boot up my box without making
sure the drive door on that cd is open so that the system
will skip trying to read it. HELP!?

Remove one of the Drives and see what happens. What's your Power Supply look
like?

I tried physically disconnecting the 'bad' CD drive and
just booting up with a single drive... the system hung
during boot-up, wouldn't even go to the POST screen...
the chip's an AMD and their site doesn't list my ASUS
board as one of their 'approved/compatible' boards... I'm
wondering if this boils down to the BIOS not enjoying the
company of the drivers I updated?
....then again, I'm still wondering why we park in
driveways and drive on parkways...
