I was told this program came with the computer I bought, I didn't know it was a trial until it stopped in the middle of my work and I couldn't edit or continue.

When you decide to convert your Office 2003 Trial version product to a "Full Retail
Perpetual License Product", you must first purchase a perpetual license product key
from Microsoft or purchase a full retail version of the product from either Microsoft
or from any authorized retail store.

Are you sure it was not just a matter of needing activation?
If so, follow the directions to activate.
If it is just a trial version, you will need to buy the full version
to have continued use of the application.
Contact HP for details of exactly what they sold you and also check
your invoice.

Reading the product specs for the Pavilion a430n on the HP website
shows that it includes:
"Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition (60-day trial) and Works
7.0 (cd/dvd)"
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=c00055520#N104A5
So your Microsoft Office is a 60 day trial but it appears that the
Microsoft Works 7.0 is a full version.
There is a word processor included with Microsoft Works 7.0 but it
does not have all of the options and capabilities of Microsoft Word
2003. But you should be able to use it for most normal word
processing and it probably should be able to import the Word 2003
documents that you have created, or at least those that are basically
just text with formatting and fonts.
Good luck
