CD ROM

At start up my CD ROM and DVD player load up. While the PC is on the
light
for the CD Rom keeps coming on like it wants to play something ;
although
there is nothing in it. Eventually it disappears in device manager,
right
now the CD Rom and DVD player don't appear. Scanned the disk with
automatic
repair already. Uninstalled drivers and reinstalled. No new drivers
available.
Isn't there a way to check CD Rom after booting up with a program that
is
installed for checking hardware?I did that once for my hard drive but I
can't remember the sequence.
Has anyone else had this problem?

This sounds to be that the IDE cable which connects the CD Rom and DVD to
the motherboard is not working correctly. Check to make sure that this IDE
cable is installed correctly and that the red stripe of the cable is aligned
with PIN 1 of the 2 units.
