I jsut bought a 175 Gb drive that came with its own ATA
controller card. Reading some of the literature, it
states that XP does not recognize drive larger than 137 Gb
and the controller card is needed. I have been out here
looking to see if there was any info on driver updates so
I don't have to use the card. So far, haven't found
anything.

There are actually three pieces to the puzzle in making drives bigger than
137GB work.
1) Need to have XP Sp1 for official 48bit support.
2) Need to have a hard drive controller with 48bit support.
3) Need to have drivers for the hard drive controller that support 48bit
addressing.
The reason so many of the larger drives come with a controller card is that
the majority of built in IDE controllers people already have are not capable
of addressing the larger drives, so the drive makers include the card to
guarantee that consumers will be able to use the drives they purchase.
Newer motherboards may support the large drives natively without needing the
add-in cards, however, assuming you have the newest drivers and XP SP1.
The following links from the knowledge bases of a couple of the larger drive
makers have more info on this:

I have 200g wetsern digit with ATA card as a slave.
The original XP disc still works as a master. it works fine and no problem.
The ata card is working as the SCSI controller with the built-in ide
adapter.
IDE drive in and SCSI out. Any IDE compaible disc etc can be cabled in.But
the XP recognize those as a scsi drive.
It is a black box functioning as ide-in and scsi-out.
The most important thing:
The XP will recognize the new hardware as a scsi and will install the
best drive from XP.
Choose the manual installation of the controller using the enclosed
drive from the MFG.( this is critical).
