My DVD/CDRW has somehow dissappeared from my computer at
no fault of mine. I was attempting to burn a cd from my
windows media player 9 and a unknown application error
occured. Now the cd player will not even open or work on
my laptop. I looked up potential troubleshooting
possibilities and I came across slowing the recording
speed. Thats when it disappeared from the computer and I
am positive I followed the directions exactly. How can I
restore the driver or even have my computer recognize that
I even have DVD/CDRW player in the computer so that I can
even reinstall it.

Do you see the drives in your device manager?
Do they have a warning on them?
If so, this should help you.
Goto http://www.aumha.org/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch
That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))
Basically, the reg file from above carries out the steps displayed at this
website
CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,
or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP

Call the police.
If they have not been physically removed look up the issue like missing
CDRW in google and add site:www.microsoft.com after the search terms. This
is common.
