View Full Version : Question about filename length in XP built-in CD burning software

Hi,

According to Microsoft Technet, the Windows XP in-built CD burning software
supports filename lengths up to 64 characters. However, ever since I
first installed XP, I have been able to burn files with much longer
filenames on a CD using the XP in-built software.

(See: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?
url=/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/prkc_fil_ipge.asp)

On the other hand, other CD burning software (Nero, DiscJuggler et al)
actually restrict filename length to 64 characters; if a file with a
longer filename length is encountered, the software will throw an error and
not burn the disc until the filename is shortened.

Cdrfaq.org says, cryptically, that "the limit on Joliet filenames is 64
characters. (Some software reportedly allows up to 110.)"

(See: http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq03.html#S3-5-4)

What's going on here? Is XP using a variant of Joliet that supports more
than 64 characters, and if so, where is it documented? Or is it using some
other format altogether, and again, where is it documented? Does this have
something to do with the "CDFS" file system displayed in the properties
window of burned CDs in XP? Are there other CD burning programs that can
be patched or whatever to burn longer filenames?

I'd like to know because my XP in-built cd burning software went haywire
(see earlier post) and I have many files, some with filename lengths
greater than 64, that I'd like to burn quickly without having to perform
selective renaming.

TIA,
Anomolos
