I have a Maxtor 5000LE external hard drive and it is not
being recognized in windows explorer or My Computer. It
comes up in device manager & disk management. The only
way it comes up in explorer is if I connect it while I'm
in explorer. Once I exit explorer its gone. I've
downloaded current drivers from Maxtor, unistall &
reinstalled drivers & Dantz retrospect program several
times, removed all start up programs & still the same
problem. Maxtor told me, I had a registry problem. How do
I go about correcting this? I'm running XP Pro SP-1,
Intel P-4 1.6G, Belkin USB 2.0 card, 512 on memory.

Thanks
Oscar

Have a look at a similar problem on the 13 / 01/ 03.
Hop this helps.

Try this. It worked for my usb card reader which comes under Mass storage
device.
The solution to this problem involves using the registry
editor (regedit) with which you should be comfortable or
you can cause damage to your system.

While running regedit, conduct a search for the
string "LowerFilters". Under the heading "Disk Drives"
(class "DiskDrive") you will likely find a key with the
name "LowerFilters" with either a null entry or a binary
entry. Click on this value, and either delete the entry
or rename the key to ";LowerFilters" to preserve the
entry to allow it to be restored at a later point in time.

You will have to repeat the procedure to correct
additional registry entries if you have more than one
user configured for access on your computer (multiple
user configurations).

Hope it helps.
