Someone has sent me a contract, which I need to sign and then fax back.

I've never sent a fax in my life before, I don't have a fax machine. So far
I've managed to send my first fax using "just fax it" software. However,
this application only seems to let me type. Hoe exactly would I do about
returning a signed contract that I have on paper?

Sign the contract and go down to a business that does copying and faxing
[check office supply stores also] and have them fax it for you for a small
price.

If you want to do it through the computer, you first have to get a
digital image of the paper document into the computer. The usually
ways are scanning or digital photographs. The scanner is the less
expensive and less complicated. If you do not have a scanner, you
would have to use a commercial faxing service. Many office supply
companies will do faxing services and I am sure there are companies
like Kinkos in the United Kingdom. What about your local post
office? Your post office does more things than ours here in the
United States.
