I recently bought this Toshiba notebook and have been
transferring and reinstalling all my stuff. All of a
sudden I have two things that puzzle me. I tried to
install my Online Agent software and I get an error
message that setup cannot continue because it can't find
the autoexec.bat file. Sure enough when I did my own
search of the computer, I don't find an autoexec.bat
file. This puzzles me because I don't have any trouble
booting the machine up.
The second puzzle is that when I do boot, I get a message
that the computer can't find a file called bridge.dll. I
have no idea what this is used for. I did run Norton
recently and removed some suspicious files but don't
recall seeing a file called bridge.dll.
What should I do? I have searched the website but don't
find anything that addresses this.
HELP!

What's "Online Agent"? How old is that program? You might want to
consider looking for a newer program with similar functionality.

Go into folder options in the control panel and access the advanced tab and take a look at your settings. You probably have it configured to hide system and operating files. As for Bridge.dll it's what is known as a BHO or Browser Hijacker. Go>start\run an
d type in msconfig and then click ok. Now click the startup tab and uncheck bridge.dll. Now Go>Start>run>regedit>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>MICROSOFT>WINDOWS>CurrentVersion>Run Delete key with bridge.dll in it. To delete the key you right click on it and
then click delete.Get and run Adaware or Spybot Search and destroy. Get SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard and HijackThis. All are free and excellent programs to help prevent things like this. Welcome to the eXPeriance :~)

XP does not use an autoexec.bat and only pays attention to one in order
to pick up any SET or PATH lines that installing software may have put
there. It usually has an empty file - make one with Notepad to keep
this install happy. Then check what it has done to it. It may just
have put in a PATH line - but if it has set out to load some TSR
program, then it is never going to be allowed to load that and almost
certainly will never work under XP
