canon lide50 scanner

I cannot get this scanner to work on my USB 2.0 using XP
512 MB, 2.4 GHZ, 80GB HD.
Removed all the drivers and old twain references.
Reinstalled latest and greatest canon drivers for XP. The
scanner travels once, starts its scan and sticks at 0%
progress indicator. After a 30 seconds or so time-out it
says to check the cable and other things which donot apply.
Anybody any clue ?

Try another cable or check USB drivers as well!
