XP comes with Direct X 8 installed. You are already DX7 compatable.
Start, run, type in: dxdiag, hit enter.

XP is delivered with DirectX 8 built-in. DirectX 7 never was shipped for
XP. DirectX 8 should support any game that requires DirectX 7 thru 1.

Greetings --
You don't. If you have WinXP (which you must or you wouldn't be
posting in this news group), then you have, at the very least, DirectX
8, which is what came built into WinXP. Since then, you may have even
upgraded to DirectX 9. To see if you did, click Start > Run, and type
in "dxdiag," and then click <OK>.
