How can you remove a usb device from an XP system that you don't have
anymore?
example, I sold a scanner and bought a new one. XP sees it as 'Scanner #2'.
But I don't know where to delete the first instance of the scanner. I've
tried plugging the new one in the same USB port as the old one was, and XP
called it 'Scanner #3'.
thx.
ps. 'Scanner #?" is just a naming convention so I didn't have to type the
full name out.

Reboot into the "Safe" mode and show "hidden" devices. Then, remove all
scanners.

Doesn't work.
I still have my HP 2200C scanner 'half' installed and
useless because I can not remove the 'ghost' device. It
just says it 'may' be needed to boot system if I try to
remove, or just fails if I try to reinstall drivers.
I'm running the scanner from my linux machine atm due to
XP being so lame it won't let me reinstall a simple usb
scanner.
