I was having serious issues with my windows xp so I
decided to reinstall the program. It went through and
checked the system, said it was missing files and it would
reload the files missing. This is the problem, it went
through it and while in the download an error came up that
says I am missing the "asms" file and it cannot find the
path to get it. I put it in my laptop to find out if the
disk had it, I did a search on the disk and it found the
file. I cannot finish the set up, I cannot go back to the
screens I had before, when it boots up, it always goes to
the setup and cannot find the file so cancels it and
restarts.... I just want to restore it or format the hard
drive. I have tried to start it in Safemode, it won't let
that happen. I am screwed. What can I do. Please help.

The XP CD is bootable. Set your computer (consult the manual) to boot from
the CD. From there, you can perform a repair installation, or you can
format and reinstall. However, it sounds as if your CD Drive may be in need
of a cleaning, or the CD itself may b marred/scratched.

For information on how to do a 'repair' installation, see www.dougknox.com,
