View Full Version : Windows Explorer crashing, unable to access folders
Weasel
April 2nd 04, 03:43 PM
Regardless of how many times I restart the computer, I am
unable to open any folders (or access Control Panel,
Network Places, My Computer, ect.). Whenever I try, the
taskbar, all icons on the desktop, and all programs vanish.
After a moment, most return (some programs and taskbar
icons stay gone), but I cannot access folders, Control
Panel, or anything else regarding Windows Explorer.
Over the past few weeks, Windows Explorer has tended to
crash on me much more often (and usually opens the System32
folder at every startup for some reason), but this is the
first time I haven't been able to access folders at all.
The problem seems to be present under all usernames. As far
as I can tell, it doesn't seem to be caused by any sort of
virus or spyware.

This issue is complexed and I really hate to take this one step at a
time.....either it is an update you have installed, spyware, virii, third
party software, etc. I can only suggest at this time to either call up Task
Manager by Ctrl/Alt/Delete and end the process to explorer.exe and start
anew on (File/New Task/explorer.exe) or try the measures from here:

That's not the error message. Though that event is written after the =
error message.
It looks like
Hanging application Explorer.EXE, version 6.0.2600.0, hang module =
hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at =
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
and is in the application log.

Normal program crashes give me an error message similar to=20
that, but whenever Explorer crashes, it instead comes up as=20
"information", not "error". The only thing in the log is=20
what I posted above.

I hate repeating everyone but.....
I am having the same problem as the other people on this thread, however, I am running win2k Pro. I am not getting any error message, there is nothing that pops up in any of the event viewers. I was wondering if there was anyone out there that could help
me track this issue down. I am semi familiar with performance logs and alerts. I am able to access the MMC console yet, every time a "system" command is sent to the OS it crashes. (i.e anytime you click my documents or control panel or my computer...etc
....) If anyone could offer me any advice it would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

then
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=3Dkb;en-us;316434&FR=3D1&P=

Then if the above doesn't work the time consuming stuff starts. I =
personally would just reinstall. Takes an hour.

Firstly, if you want to use your computer try (the two that you're not =
doing now)
1. Use Explorer in it's folder windows mode (eg My Comp/My Docs)
2. Use Explorer in it's explore mode (with the tree)
3. Use Internet Explorer. Start it and type c:\ in the address bar. It =
will look like explorer.
All of the above work slightly differently behind the hood
Then
There is a setting in Start - Control Panel - Folder Options - View to =
Launch FoldersIn Seperate Process
This may enable the error reporting (not that it's likely to be useful =
but it might be - it might give a hint)
Then do this
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=3D310353&FR=3D1
then
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=3Dkb;en-us;316434&FR=3D1&P=
A=3D1&SD=3DHSCH
Then if the above doesn't work the time consuming stuff starts. I =
personally would just reinstall. Takes an hour.
