***My Spec:
Recently upgraded to Windows XP Professional (SP1).
I have an Iomega Peerless 20GB external HD connected by
firewire to my SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum card.

***The Problem:
During a write to the drive (transferring files), larger
files cause the connection to the Peerless HD to deadlock
and the drive becomes disconnected. IE. The drive letter
assigned to the HD is dropped. I have to reboot to get
reconnected to it.

***Symptoms:
1. The file gets PARTLY written to the HD, but it fails
along the way. The point of failure is random in every
attempt. IE. The failure could occur at any point during
the write.
2. Smaller files (under 5MB) appear to transfer to the
drive OK. Larger files (over 10MB) cause it to
destabilise and fail.
3. The error message received is: "{Delayed Write Failed}
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file x.
The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a
failure of your computer hardware or network connection.
Please try to save this file elsewhere."

This problem never occured under Windows 98SE. I have had
the disk for 8 months.

It is not the Peerless drive at fault. My friend also has
one and replacing the product causes the same results.

Attempts to resolve have included upgrading all drivers
(soundblaster, IomegaWare)... No effect.
Unchecking all system and startup services... No effect.
Reinstalling (repairing) Windows XP Professional (SP1)...
No effect.
Disconnecting all USB devices from the computer... No
effect.
Turning -off- the 'Enable write caching' feature for the
disk... No effect.
Changing registry information: There is an article in the
MS knowledge base which identifies a very similar
problem, except it is writing to a SERVER. (see below)
However, this did not fix my problem.

***The Event Viewer:
EventID is initially 51 with source 'disk', but the
failure itself is EventID 50 with source 'fastfat'
The last status code 'word' is: c000000d
I don't know what this translates to.

I have tried contacting online help at iomega.com several
times, but they are baffled by my problem.

***Interesting Notes when looking for help:
The Microsoft Knowledge Base yielded some interesting
articles, Namely:
"Delayed Write Failed" Error Message When You Write a
File to a Server
Very similar to my problem, only this is with an Iomega
Disk.
I really think this is a Windows XP Pro (SP1) problem.
