Ethernet port not working

How do you find out why the ethernet port will not work?
Does it have anything to do with the error message I
receive every time I turn the computer on "Hardware not
found" "VIA bus master IDE driver" ?? I have been
fighting this for months, if anyone has suggestion I would
appreciate it..

Have you installed the latest via chipset drivers?
If not, you probably need them
