Using a 4 port KVM switch to attach the same Keyboard, Monitor, and Mouse to
3 different PCs.
One PC running Windows XP Home started have mouse 'lockup' after installing
SP1.
This seems to occur ONLY when the HardDrive is 'spinning up' AND the mouse
is being moved at the same time.
Everytime it happens the symptoms follow a similar pattern:
1) 'select' or 'start' something in any application window (after HardDrive
'sleeps')
2) Hard Drive 'starts' ... Hard Drive light goes one, cursor 'freezes' at
the same time
3) Hard Drive activity completes ... system no longer responds to mouse
actions
.... optical mouse lights up when moved
.... stays 'lit' for a long time
.... buttons do not work, wheel does not work, mouse movement does not affect
cursor
.... only a re-boot will restore normal operation of the mouse
.... this happens with 3 different 'PS2 Compatible' Mice attached to the PS2
Mouse port
.... has also happened when attached directly (bypassing the KVM Switch)
.... mouse continues to work properly when switched to other PCs (XP Pro and
Win 2K)
.... a USB mouse plugged into the USB port does work properly when this
problem occurs
.... PS2 port mouse has worked properly in this configuration for over 6
months
.... problem only started a few months ago (soon after SP1 installed)
.... Device manager shows the mouse is 'working properly' while it is
non-responsive
.... problem does not occur on the PC running Windows XP Pro or Win 2K
I have installed all patches & updates using Window update
I think this is a software problem ... I cannot find out if it is a 'known
problem'
.... will someone from Microsoft please comment about the status of this
problem
.... can we expect a fix soon?
