View Full Version : What are these files? $NtUnistallQxxxxx$ ?

My Windows Explorer shows, in the C:\Windows folder, a list of about thirty
files, highlighted in blue, and all of the form $NtUninstallQxxxxx$, where
the xxxx are various numbers. I suspect they were created by my installing
the vast number of so-called "critical updates" to Windows XP (Home).
What is the downside, if any, of deleting them?

You may not be able to uninstall those critical updates.

Hi Paul,
The downside of removing those folders is that you cannot uninstall the =
update once you have done so. If you have no intention of removing them, =
go ahead and delete them. Then go to Add & Remove in the Control Panel =
and select the update for removal. You will get an error message, =
followed by an option to remove it from the listings.

Rick,
There's a utility on my site that will automatically scan for the Hotfix
backup files, and remove them and their associated Registry entries.
